Olivia Mouriopoulos

What is your job title?

Public Education Coordinator (PEC) & Diverse Community Outreach Coordinator

What attracted you to the position when you first applied?

As a Public Education Coordinator, I have the opportunity to educate persons living with dementia, care partners, health care professionals and the general public about dementia and related illnesses. In my role as a Diverse Community Outreach Coordinator, I am the lead for The CODE Project. This initiative works to create better access to dementia care for individuals who live in the city of Hamilton and identify as part of a diverse community. Education and social programming (i.e. Memory Cafes) help to raise dementia awareness as well.

What does your role entail?

With having a family history of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, this was something I felt very passionate about. Knowing that I could potentially have the opportunity to assist other families that were going through a similar experience to mine was very powerful.

What is your favourite part about your role?

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is when I’m speaking with a client and they experience a “lightbulb moment”. Where all of a sudden things make
more sense to them and you can see the pieces coming together in their mind. That’s when I know I’m doing my job.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I’m a dog mom who likes to put on solo concerts while driving in the car, especially if the 70’s/80’s are playing! It’s hard to be sad when “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen comes on!
