Getting Started
This session is for anyone wanting an overview of dementia. It is intended for people who are at the beginning of a journey of dementia; whether newly diagnosed or new to learning about dementia. It is also an opportunity to learn about the services and programs provided by this Alzheimer Society.

Toolbox Talk

A monthly interactive meeting where we will connect, discuss, and practice a research-based technique that has been shown to help and support the person living with dementia in your life. From Teepa Snow, Montessori Approach to Care, GentleCare, to Alzheimer Society literature, Toolbox Talk is your chance to ask your questions, try something new, and connect with others.

The webinar format supports your choice to open your camera and actively join in, or you can listen in and learn in your own way.

Caregiving from a Distance

 For family and friends who do not live with the person living with dementia, who they support. 

A monthly interactive meeting where care partners share strategies to support the person living with dementia in their life.

Focus on Communication

For family and friends of persons living with dementia. A monthly interactive meeting where care partners will focus on one communication strategy or technique that fosters supportive communication with the person living with dementia in their life.

Participants will discuss how the strategy supports meaningful communication in a manner that affirms self-worth and maintains dignity.

Finding Your Way

For care partners, friends and community members who are supporting persons living with dementia. Learn about topics such as wayfinding, safety in the community, safe living spaces, and strategies for risk reduction.

Choices in Care

Care partners are invited to join us as we explore various care options available to you to support the person living with dementia as their care needs increase.

By attending this session, participants will learn:

  • Have a better understanding of when it is the right time to explore options for increased care
  • Discuss and learn the differences between retirement homes and long-term care homes
  • Discuss the idea of how to increase care within the home to age in place
  • Look at the application process for long-term care
  • Review what to do while waiting for an offer of a room in long-term care
  • Explain the planning needs in preparation for the day of the move into long-term care

Middle Stage Education Series

A 4 part online learning series for care partners & friends of persons living with dementia.

By attending this series, participants will learn:

  • How to support the changes in behaviour in the person living with dementia
  • The “hands-on” skills for hygiene, dressing, and nourishment of the person living with dementia
  • About home care, adult day programs & the long-term care application process

Preparing for Later Stages

A 2 part learning series for care partners & friends of persons living with dementia

By attending this series, participants will:

  • Better understand the physical, cognitive, and emotional changes & needs unique to the person living with dementia in the late and end stage of dementia
  • Explore methods to retain their relationship with the person living with dementia
  • Discuss the decisions & preparations to ready themselves for these stages

This weekly drop-in program offering laughter yoga is a unique exercise routine that combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing (Pranayama). This failure-free program encourages everyone to laugh for no single reason. Intended for care partners, persons living with dementia, and the general public.
